Abstract

Background
In recent times, total knee arthroplasty (TKA)
has become more common in Nigeria,
particularly in Lagos. TKA implant
manufacturers have a presence in Nigeria, but
often do not have a full complement of staff and
stock of implants because of relatively low
demand and wide geographical spread. This
study aims to review the records of patients who
had TKA with Genesis II prostheses in Lagos,
Nigeria in the study period and to document the
clinical presentation and common sizes of
implants used in order to recommend the sizes
of implants that should be stocked in hospitals
with limited resources.
Methodology:
Records of all the patients who had TKA in
Lagos from June 2014 to July 2016 with
Genesis II prostheses were reviewed.
Biographic data, aetiology of the osteoarthritis,
knee deformities and the sizes of femoral and
tibial components and inserts used were
recorded and analysed using Microsoft Excel
software.
RESULTS:
Fifty four patients had TKA performed during
this period, 17 bilateral TKA totalling 71 knees.
Their ages ranged from 45 to 82 years with a
mean age of 65.7 years. The male: female ratio
was 1:12.5. There were 39 (54.9%) varus
knees, 12 (16.9%) valgus and 20 (28.2%)
knees of normal alignment. The most
commonly used femoral prosthesis was size 4,
used in 29 knees (40.9%), and size 6 was used
least in 5 knees (7%). Size 3 tibial prostheses
was the most commonly used in 44 knees
(61.9%) and the least commonly used was size
6, used in one knee (1.4%). The 11mm
polyethylene spacer was the most frequently
used in 22 knees (31%), and the least used was
21 mm, used in one knee (1.4%).
CONCLUSION
Sizes 4 and 5 femoral implants (77%) and 3
and 4 tibial implants (75%) are more commonly
used along with Polyethylene sizes 11,
15,13mm and 9mm. These sizes should be
stocked in larger numbers than the rest.
