Abstract

The paper seeks to unravel a relationship between body mass index, and bone mineral density in patients above 40 who presented with osteoarthritis of the knee in our facility. The patients were assessed for severity of the osteoarthritis and screened for osteoporosis by measurement of bone mineral density. A total of 66 patients were involved. Majority were over 50, 83% were female and most had moderate to severe osteoarthritis. After analysis of the data, the study shows that there is an inverse relationship between BMI and BMD in patients aged 40 and above with osteoarthritis of the knees.
