Identification of pregnant women with insulin resistance may forestall negative outcomes. Our study aimed to determine the profile of IR using the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). This is a cross–sectional baseline data of third-trimester non-diabetic, non-hypertensive pregnant women consecutively recruited into a cohort study that evaluated IR of mothers and their babies. The study comprised 397 pregnant women aged between 20 and 41 (mean 31.5 ±4.3) years. HOMA-IR was weakly correlated with weight (r=-0.10, p=0.04) and BMI (r=-0.11, p=0.03). IR may be defined by HOMA-IR greater than 4.10 in Nigerian pregnant women at third-trimester.
