Abstract

Sarcomas of the bones of the extremities are rare, but major causes of limb amputation. Limb sparing surgery has evolved as a result of advances in reconstructive surgery and all specialties involved. It is the treatment of choice in most patients with lower extremity sarcomas, where resources and facilities are available. It preserves the extremity involved, avoiding its amputation. It however results in a considerable defect of bone that requires reconstruction. Our study discusses the case of a 25 year old male who had resection of the left femur on account of osteosarcoma, and subsequent free vascularized fibular graft (FVFG) for reconstruction.
